You Have to Catch Them All.

In thinking about the problematic use of videogames, a strong candidate that came to mind was Pokémon. This series had me hooked when I was younger and I think there are quite a few traits of the game that encourage those addictive ties with the game. The whole slogan ‘gotta catch ‘em all,’ reminds us of our goal, to completely fill our pokedex. This can be a horrendously arduous task, and take a very long time for those of us who are determined to become Pokémon masters. It must also require seeking out other masters within the real world to trade Pokémon and help complete the pokedex. The grind factor within the game is immense. I can recall hours and hours of training Pokémon is the wild grasses of Kanto, proving just how captivated by the game was. Pokémon is also a fair example of a game with a rapid feedback loop of agency, as each battle is a reward in its own and helps your on your way, making time-loss quite easy within the games. This may be why Online Gamers Addicts Anonymous lists pokémon as one of the more addictive games.
