The
other day in lecture 6 Kevin said something that was so very true in relation
to my gaming. It was about how people find a specific way to play the game (
the 'optimum' build ) and they only play it that way and if you do anything
else then you're a fool! Having only really played strategy games such as AOE 3
and HoN/ DotA the decisions you can make are nearly endless. However after
playing a few hundred games you start to notice the standard build/strategy
for each unit/civilization. It is so standardized that you can bet your bottom
dollar on what strategy an opposing player will implement and if you dare break
the mould you are yelled at and called a series of ' noob '
' kid ' or any combination of expletives. Yet whenever I did in
fact break the standard way of playing I tended to have a lot more fun even it
did mean i lost a few more games than usual. I guess it brings up an interesting
conundrum for game developers and players alike; is it more important to win or
to have fun? I mean who really cares if you have a 90% win record on Age of
Empires 3, yet you literally get no further enjoyment from the game due to its repetitive
nature of building the same units, at the same times, for a set period. Isn’t
it better to lose a few but try new exciting strategies? I guess I’ll log on
and find out…
