It's not every day that I'm called a Brazilian as a pejorative, wait yes it is. In perhaps one of the least inspired spin off games that uses Warcraft 3's custom map 'Defense of the Ancients' (DotA, Heroes of Newerth pits two teams of five players against each other in order to destroy the opposing team's base. Naturally the idea of putting two groups of five strangers together with the goal of working together is a going to be problematic. It's interesting to see the amount of racism emerge from the frustration and plain nerd rage that this game often incites in it's players. A popular way of insulting another player and calling his skill into question is calling "BR!", or basically suggesting they are a terrible player because they are from Brazil. It's as though the characteristics of a bad player have been simply shifted to become the characteristics of a Brazilian in the game space of Heroes of Newerth, which is a problem on many levels. It's interesting to see the Salem witch hunt mentality of players due to this cultural climate. For example, my username is El_Pico, named after a song I like, but whenever I join a game, I am immediately met with insults and requests to leave as I am clearly an idiotic Brazilian who cannot speak English nor play the game. I think it's interesting how racism operates in spaces where skin colour is irrelevant and once again it seems to favour the white patriarchy as seen by not only the player's social climate, but by the structure of the game as well, where the three servers to play on are USWest, USEast and Europe.
Just a thought.
