After reading the article The Mangle of Play (01B), I realized that playing video games is not like what I thought as just for fun or for a feeling of satisfaction by upgrading from one level to another now, but a serious task for gamers to finish. Or even a job from which many people can earn their salaries, like the adena farmers hired by virtual-currency selling company. As an outsider, I can hardly get the same thirsty feeling that gamers have for the updating of their new arms or making themselves upgrade to a higher level. Not mention the phenomenon turning up now that playing games become a job which takes away the original goal games designed for, I think. So that makes me wonder what video games would be like then. Will it becomes a totally commercial industry which focuses simply on the profit exchange from the virtual game world to the real life world instead of entertainment itself. If so, that would be so boring and tragic as we lost the opportunity for pure play (no matter to those seems like professional gamers or the ordinary people who just want to relax themselves by playing games), but have to take it seriously as a mission to complete, just like what we do to the chaos in our daily life, then what is the meaning for games?
For me, even though I did play some small games before, playing games is just for fun in leisure without bringing myself any pressure. So I can not imagine what the people like me who are only for a relax by playing games should do when it is treated as a job, a way of making money. Maybe at that time, game designers will find some other ways to let people play or creat some new game styles to work out this problem (which I think)?

Same.. I never thought such things like "adena farming" where people had to work via playing games to earn income existed! Those workers have a sad, boring life really.
ReplyDeleteMaybe game developers will develop new games which will solve this problem.. but i think it will be unlikely as there are always "business"- like gamers that are financially-motivated into turning games for money making schemes for themselves... :/
