Hypodermic Model not so bad?

During our first lecture Kevin talked about the hypodermic model in relation to video games. This is of course, the idea that the brain will absorb anything that is put in front of it. This argument is widely used by video game critics to put video games in a negative highlight in the sense of how violent games seep into the minds of our youth and poison them to do things that they would not usually do. This argument probably has some merit however I believe that video games and the hypodermic model can be viewed as a beneficial theory. Ever since I received Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome at the age of 7 I’ve been hooked into ancient history, especially the military side. Through the years of AOE to AOE 3 I’ve learned extensive knowledge about every major civilization of the past 2000 years. I was so involved in the games and absorbed so much knowledge that I almost undertook a degree in ancient history and still to this day can recite different civilization’s military history over the past two millennia. So in conclusion I think that the hypodermic model does have a certain validity however it can be argued just as strongly, that it can be used for just as much good as some say it is used for evil.
