Hi Ju Mei,

The reading already answers your question in the beginning when it discusses game design, "We are
all familiar with the “grind” associated with many MMOG titles and the fact that
casual gamers, who have less time to invest in leveling an online character, are often
left utterly unable to compete."(Steinkuehler, 200)

In many cases if you play with a friend and you fall behind you won't be able to do the same quests or activities together which makes catching up more important than enjoying the gameplay itself. Often, it is your friends that will get you started in a game in the first place and sometimes the social aspect of gaming is emphasized in MMOGs. To answer your question, I suggest you play some MMOGs which are increasingly time consuming to level up to understand why an American would want to pay someone else to level their characters.

Thanks,

Jacob Hui
