ecently, Sony seems to have started producing 3D videogames on their playstation consoles and Nvidia on PC games. I guess their goal is to give games a lifelike quality so that the players are more enticed by their games. But are they really going to be convincing enough to facilitate immersion ?Frankly, I'm not a fan of 3D films. The glasses are distracting, the screen just looks like some cardboard cutout artwork thing, things that fly at you come nowhere near enough to make it seem real. Avatar just gave me a headache. Since doing the week's readings, I thought that maybe 3D video gaming may not be as successful as Sony or Nvidia wants them to be because although it may heighten engagement with the game, it won't necessarily heighten immersion because it has so many factors that could distract you from the game and not allow you to sink into the gaming space. It's like how bad internet connections can prevent immersion. Bad graphics, bad depth of field or badly fitting glasses could also do the same. Think about it, if you're getting a headache sitting 10m from the screen in a movie theatre, imagine what kind of migraine the 30cm focal range of sitting infront of your PC will give.
If you are truly immerged, you would forget about the fact that you're sat on a couch holding a mouse or a joypad. Would you really be able to forget something that's covering your eyeballs?
And say that you were surprised by that real looking 3D zombie that just ran at you. And you jump. And then land...back on the couch, breaking the continuity of that small second of immersion you had as you realize you're back on the couch in your lounge and not in that dark, industrial zone looking alleyway.
So, I think that the constant movement to and fro of the 3D characters/objects will just seem like a 2 second spectacle rather than something that will draw you in further to the world of the game. But, who knows? I haven't tried 3D gaming yet. Perhaps 3D will work with gaming, although it hasn't been convincing with films or tv and maybe it truly is oh-so-wonderful and could transport me to a whole new world of gaming experience.
